Rachel Coulter PhD MChem

Renewable Engine Post-Doctorate Researcher

Rachel joined South West College in August 2017 to take up the post of Post-doctoral Researcher for the Renewable Engine Programme. Funded by INTERREG VA and managed by SEUPB, the Programme aims to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial need for innovation. To achieve this 12 PhD projects have been set up in which the students work collaboratively with local companies. Rachel manages the PhD researchers as well as pursuing her own research interests.

Rachel has a background in chemistry and previously worked at a pyrotechnic effect manufacturer in Peterborough, England where she was responsible for new product design as well as optimising existing products to reduce manufacturing time and cost. Rachel completed a PhD at the University of Liverpool that involved synthesis of new materials for application in ink formulations for laser coding and marking. During this time, she developed skills in inorganic chemical synthesis, a wide range of analytical techniques and laser testing. The PhD project was in conjunction with a local business so Rachel has seen first-hand the benefits of industrial collaboration on high-level research projects.

Prior to this Rachel received a Masters of Chemistry degree from the University of Edinburgh. During this time, she spent a year at research laboratory in Lille, France and managed the University’s Irish Society. Rachel is also involved in the MissSTEM project at South West College aiming to encourage more young women to pursue scientific careers.
